This reference design illustrates how silicon carbide (SiC) MOSFETs can be utilized to enhance the performance of motor drives for auxiliary motors in electric vehicles, as well as in Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems and other similar applications. By employing SiC MOSFETs in these contexts, one can achieve increased system efficiency, reduced audible noise, and greater power density compared to silicon-based solutions. Although SiC MOSFETs are capable of very high dv/dt switching transitions, the switching speed can be easily managed with the gate resistor to achieve levels compatible with standard motor insulation, while still maintaining lower switching losses than silicon IGBTs.
