LoRa Basics™ Modem Relay: A Low-Cost Battery Powered Network Extender
Every wireless technology has a limit to its link-budget, including the LoRa modulation which has an impressive link-budget of up to 158dB with a transmit power level of 22dBm (160mW). In certain situations, such as with some LoRaWAN connected water or gas meters, there may be cases where they are unable to connect to any gateway due to a lossy RF path. Until recently, the only solution was to install an additional gateway closer to these meters. However, this approach is costly and not feasible for some deployments, as it may be excessive to install a new gateway just to connect a few meters. The LoRa Alliance has developed an alternative solution called LoRaWAN relay, which is explained in this white paper. The paper will provide an overview of the relay implementation and its interaction with the end device and network server, as well as present a few use case examples.
